As we round up on sharing the nuggets from the Unleash the Giants Seminar themed “Thinking Beyond the Now”, we will look at the session led by Mr Owen Arasomwan titled “Strategic Thinking for Personal & Business Growth.”

He started with a quote from James Cash Penny which says “Growth is never by mere chance; it is the result of forces working together.” He stressed the fact that growth requires deliberate and conscious efforts.

According to him, business growth takes time, focus and vision. Three major factors influencing growth are Strategy, Entrepreneur and Firm.

“Business can never grow beyond the entrepreneur’s vision, the firm organization and the strategies employed.” – Owen Arasomwan.

Linking this to personal growth, he said ‘your vision, goals and mission determine who you become…’

Clarify your vision by;

– Thinking Big: believe in yourself, people and God.

– Thinking Entrepreneurially: develop capacity to manage change, ability to handle risk and capacity for continuous learning.

– Thinking Globally: adopt global standards to your business.

– Thinking Investment: have an investment mentality. Don’t play for the short term.

– Thinking Execution: knowing without doing is a waste of time and mental energy. Action speaks louder than words always.

So that brings us to the end of this series.

Still distilling the nuggets from the last ‘Unleash the Giants’ Seminar. In the session led by Mr Kelvin Otung with the topic “Managing Your Mind for Success”, he explored three areas;

1. Defining Success

2. Understanding the Mind

3. Managing the Mind

Success means different things to different people. For some it is material acquisition. For some it is how high you climb on the career ladder. He however warned that if you have to make huge trade offs to achieve any of these, then that is not success. In his words, “if you are making tons of money but are still unhappy, you haven’t embraced the fact that incredibly successful businesses often carry a heavy personal price.”

So find what makes you happy and impacts more people. Finding what motivates you is the first step to success.

He defined the Mind as the Seat of Consciousness. Man is made up of the Spirit (infinite personality – subconscious realm), the Soul or Mind (invisible personality – conscious realm) and the Body (physical personality – experiential realm).

Understanding every part of our being and gaining mastery by bringing to balance our physical and spiritual experiences in our realm of consciousness gives us the power to rule our world and become successful.

The Mind is made up of three components, Will, Emotions and Intellect. Of these three, Emotion is the most powerful and your success depends on the mastery of your emotion.

According to him, managing your mind requires some emotional intelligence with four basic domains; self awareness, social awareness, self management and relationship management.

He warned of mind’s greatest distraction, Pleasure. The fear of the past and the uncertainty of the future are known to be the drivers of the minds instability; however the real distraction of the mind is pleasure.

He concluded that being able to persuade the mind to do things that are right even if they do not give us feelings of pleasure, is the way forward.

So start paying attention to your definition of success, your mind, your emotions and how you manage your emotions. We will round up this distillation process next week.

In continuation of nuggets from the last ‘Unleash the Giants’ seminar. I will be sharing nuggets from my session.

We started by discussing Lord Luggard’s description of Nigerians in his books ‘The Dual Mandate’ published in 1926 and how it sadly still aptly fits us 92 years after. Some of the excerpts are:

“In character and temperament, the typical African of this race-type is a happy, thriftless, excitable person. Lacking in self control, discipline, and foresight…”

“His thoughts are concentrated on the events and feelings of the moment, and he suffers little from the apprehension for the future, or grief for the past…”

“He lacks the power of organization, and is conspicuously deficient in the management and control alike of men or business. He loves the display of power, but fails to realize its responsibility …”

We then proceeded to discuss some of the thought processes or mentalities responsible for this. These are:

1. Consumption Mentality: This is a Esau Mentality. Consuming rather Conserving. Common with individuals and in government.

2. Entitlement Mentality: The Prodigal Son Mentality. Focusing on the benefits, perks and privileges that come with positions or offices without actually adding value to the position or office.

3. Immediate Gratification Mentality: Craves for immediate satisfaction of desires even if it will be harmful.

4. Win the Battle Mentality: Focusing on fighting small battles and losing focus on the war. This thinking pattern favors small gains rather than focusing on the greater picture. Jostling for jobs or contracts that take you off your core areas of strengths.

5. Winner Takes All Mentality: This is a zero sum mentality. ‘I win you lose kind’ of approach. This thinking pattern is responsible for some of the inconsistencies and discontinuity in government policies once there is a change in political party.

So we need to start examining ourselves to see which of these apply to us and how we can begin to work on ourselves.

Nigeria can be great again if we all work on ourselves individually. We will continue the distillation of nuggets from the ‘Unleash the Giants’ seminar next week.

We had a great session on Saturday at the Unleash the Giants Seminar, and we were privileged to have a member of the House of Representatives speak to us. He spoke about “Leading the Change for Next Generation”.

Key points in his presentation are:

1. Be a leader within your own sphere of influence. Being a leader means having influence on those around you, and not just any influence but positive influence. This can be achieved by being very good at what you do.

To summarise his presentation, there are three things necessary for a leader and the next generation. Vision, Capacity and Character. With references to the Bible, he pointed out that without a clear vision of where you are going, you will end up nowhere. You must have a mental image of where you are going and plans on how to get there.

Also, he emphasised having capacity, being skilled at what you do. The world is in dire need of skilled people.

And to cap it character is key, especially in the age where we seem to have thrown morals to the wind. We need to have the fear of God, hate deceit, imbibe the spirit of fairness and justice.

We cannot continue to build systems and structures on wrong values and hope to move forward as a people or nation. To save this generation and future generation, we must come together as a people with a common vision, develop our various capacities and restore those values our forefathers were known for.

The more of the likes of Honorable Olajide Olatunbosun we have in the National Assembly and government generally, the better for the nation and the world. Thank you for taking time out to speak to us Sir.

In light of another Father’s Day, marked yesterday, I believe it is necessary to share some lessons on Fatherhood, so that we don’t miss the essence of marking such a day.

Fathers are very important in any society. Their presence or absence in a society determines the quality and longevity of such society.

True fathers are builders. They mould characters, form destinies, build people and affect generations. As a father, if you are acting irresponsibly, just be sure that some destinies around you, whether connected to you or not might follow your footsteps, creating more chaos in an already chaotic society. So live responsibly. Dress responsibly. Speak responsibly. Manage your habitat responsibly. Lead responsibly. I saw a cartoon of a five year old boy asking a grown man to pull up his pants (deliberately sagged). The true Father in this case is the little boy.

True fathers are mentors. They deliberately cultivate and nurture others to their full potentials. It was Winston Churchill who said “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give.” Your life is not measured by how much you have, but how many lives you have touched. Stop the vanities.

True fathers leave inheritance for their children and grand children. We live in an age where parents become burden on their children once they complete their education. Yes, you should eat the fruits of your labour, but don’t eat the fruits with the tree! You can leave either material wealth or good name for your children and wards. Don’t leave debts and bad legacy for them.

True Fathers sacrifice a lot to see their children, wards and mentees achieve their dreams. The ‘Father of all’ sacrificed His begotten Son, so that He might have many more sons. Sacrifice for your children now so as not to become the sacrifice later.

True Fathers bless. Always pronounce blessings on your children and wards. Stop the curses and negative confessions. Speak life into their lives through early morning blessings and words of encouragement.

True fathers corrects in love. Don’t withhold the stick when it should be applied, but use it with love. When you have to punish, let them know the reason for the punishment and the expected result from such punishment.

True fathers listen. No one knows it all except God. Be willing to listen to others and hear their views. Even God said let us reason together, how can you be the all-knowing?

True fathers take responsibility for their actions. Don’t bear a child you cannot raise. Don’t have sex if you are not ready to be a father. Don’t be a seed dispenser, be a life nurturer.

As we relish the memory of the just concluded Father’s Day Celebration, let us begin to weigh ourselves on the scale of True Fatherhood. The better we are as Fathers, the better our world would be.

We live in times where nerves are on edges, temper very short, pressure extremely high, and emotional threshold stretched beyond limit.

Globally depression and suicide rates have gone up. Both poor and rich, young and old are taking their lives. Who would have thought Anthony Bourdain of CNN would die of suicide!

It is therefore important that you mind the way you talk to people. Mind the way you address people. Mind the kind of remarks you make. Even your comments on social media should be civil. Argue with civility. Address issues and not personalities.

Your words may be the last straw that will break the camel’s back and push someone to end his life. Your word can be the trigger to push someone into insanity. You can’t joke carelessly anymore.

There are so many hurt people around us. The fact that they are smiling and smartly dressed doesn’t mean they are not hurting, so be kind with your words. Let your conversation be seasoned with grace that it may bring life to the hearers. Don’t kill with your builds.

Also make efforts to reach out to others. Sow a seed into someone’s life, the effect may be life changing. You may just be the life saver for that depressed soul. Let us reach out to one another. We all need some comforting. Let us work towards reducing this suicide rate.

Don’t build life around yourself alone. Lend helping hands to strangers. Be kind to people. Be a life saver and not a killer.

It has been said that Duchess Meghan Markle once took picture in front of the Buckingham Palace as a tourist student. She was a tourist in front of the Palace that recently welcomed her as a Duchess.

Be careful how you treat those around you. Do not despise or disdain anyone. The Least today can become the Great tomorrow. The Servant today can become the Governor tomorrow. Do not write anyone off. You are not the writer of that destiny, so why do you conclude that it is over for him?

Honorable Minister of Works, Power and House, Babatunde Raji Fashola once presided over the State Executive Council meeting where His Excellency, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was the State Commissioner for Justice, today the VP often presides over the Federal Executive Council meeting where BRF attends as a member! Be careful!

Do not get carried away with power, because it changes abode. If it is with you today, use it well. Use it for the good of humanity, because life will place a demand on you later which only humanity can help you meet.

That young boy may be your life saver in the future, be nice to him. That dirty looking girl may be the future First Lady, don’t maltreat her Madam, because your husband might be appointed as her personal aide-de-camp. That poor boyfriend can become a global force tomorrow. That lady you have been abusing might be the mother of the future President. Who are you to write anyone off? Ordinary dust calling another person ordinary!

Nobody can be written off because the One who specialises in writing and rewriting people’s destiny has not stopped working. The One who lifts the beggar from the dunghill and sets him among the Princes is still on the throne, so be careful.

Sow seed of kindness, help, and favor, you don’t know which will come back, or how it will come back and when it will come back. One thing is certain, every seed sown will come back, therefore be a good seed in the life of everyone around you, so that you will not hide in shame when their stories change for good. Despise none!

Your tomorrow is a product of today’s seed. If you are not happy about where you are today, you have probably taken some wrong decisions or actions in the past. If you want a better tomorrow, start planting the seed today. Every action you take today will produce a result tomorrow, either negative or positive.

It is therefore important that you weigh all your actions on the scale of tomorrow. Will that step improve your life in the future? Or does it have the capacity to damage your tomorrow? You must always think of tomorrow.

Young lady, before you sell yourself cheaply for money, have you thought of STDs, unwanted pregnancies, damage to your reproductive organs, ritualists clothed in sheep’s clothing? Think of tomorrow!

Young man, before you join that cult, have you thought of how cultists always end their lives? Have you thought of the trauma you will put your parents and loved ones in when you become a victim of cult clash? Do you want to cut your destiny short? Think of tomorrow!

Mr Area Boy, before you accept money to be a tool in the hands of wicked politicians to help disrupt election proceedings, have you asked yourself why the politicians are not using their own children? Do you know why? Because they want to preserve their tomorrow and sacrifice your own tomorrow. Think of tomorrow!

Honourable, before you divert public fund to your private purse, have you thought of the millions of lives that money will affect negatively if you divert it? Have you thought of the number of deaths occurring on daily basis in our public hospitals because you stole the money meant for equipments and drugs? Or the schools without teachers and equipped laboratories because you have starved them of funds? Or the half-baked graduates produced from such schools and the burden they add to the society? Think of tomorrow!

Mr Contractor, have you thought of the number of accidents you have caused because you did shoddy job on the road constructions? Have you thought about the destinies that are daily being wasted because of potholes? Can’t you see that you are killing people indirectly? Think of tomorrow!

Nigeria is where she is today because of the choices we have all made in the past, both leaders and followers alike. If we truly desire true and positive change , we need to start thinking of tomorrow in all of our actions. Leaving the country won’t solve the problem, you are only escaping your reality.

Think of tomorrow!
