Dealing With Bad Habits (4)

We concluded our discussion on the causes of bad habits yesterday. Today we will be looking at the implications of bad habits.
Some of these are:
1. Addiction: One of the major implications of bad habits is chronic addition. Some habits are very hard to drop. Smoking, drinking, masturbating, watching porns, and gambling are some of these hard to drop habits.
2. Further implication of addiction is an imbalanced social identity. The addicts find it difficult to live a normal life, their lives becomes disrupted by frequent indulgent in their habits. They sometimes prefer to be alone so as to have opportunity to enjoy their habits. When at work they hardly stay through one task, it is either their mind wanders off or their body goes in search of indulgence.
3. Social and Mental disorientation: They can further become socially and mentally disoriented. Mental illness can set in. For users of hard drugs, in most cases, they end up with mental illnesses, if not treated.
4. Security threat to the society: They can become serious and potent threats to the safety and security of the society. Many cases of rape, sexual abuse, assault and murder are as results of addiction to bad habits.
5. Broken Homes and Parenting Crises: These also lead to domestic abuse, separations and divorces, which inevitably affects the upbringing of the children in such homes. In most cases, the children pick up the same habits in multiplied dimension.
6. Broken Society: The aggregation of broken homes will eventually lead to broken society, break down of law and order and moral decadence.
These are some of the reasons we should stop ignoring those who are under the influence of bad habits, because somehow it gets back to us.
From tomorrow we will begin to look at the remedies.
God bless us all.
Good morning!

Dealing With Bad Habits (3)

In continuation of the causes of bad habits, we shall be looking at the two remaining factors today, namely Spiritual and Hereditary.
Spiritual Factors: How do you explain someone from a very wealthy family who shoplifts at every shopping outing? Or a young lady who lacks nothing but go to red-light zones every night to spend the night with different men and for free? Or someone who lies even when he has no reason to lie? Some habits are outright spiritual afflictions and no amount of medical or psychological therapy can deal with them.
Hereditary factors : Similarly some habits are inherited. Some polygamists have polygamy in their bloodline and until the blood connection is severed, it will keep manifesting from one generation to the next. Abraham lied about his wife. Isaac did the same thing. When it manifested in Jacob’s life, it didn’t manifest in his marriage, it manifested in stealing his brother’s blessings. Just as we transfer good traits to our children, we can also transfer bad traits.
Regardless of the cause of the bad habits, there are solutions and remedies. Finding the remedies require identifying the root causes, which is why we have been looking at the causes. Tomorrow we will proceed to look at the implications and remedies for these habits.
God bless us all.
Good morning!

Dealing With Bad Habits (2)

We started this series yesterday and began with description of bad habits and the different types of victims of bad habits.
We will continue today by looking at the root causes of these habits. We can classify the causes into these groups :

1. Social factors

2. Psychological factors

3. Spiritual factors

4. Hereditary factors
Social factors: Many young people are lured into bad habits by their peers in school, place of work, or in the neighbourhood. ‘Be not deceived, evil communications corrupt good manners.’ 1 Cor. 15:33. Habits like smoking, drinking, watching porns, masturbation, homosexualism and lesbianism are sometimes picked up through strong peer influence. I remember when I was still in my early 20s, there a man I used to look up to as a big brother in the neighbourhood. He used to smoke back then, and one day out of curiosity I requested for a stick and he obliged. Fortunately for me, my first puff remained my last puff because I didn’t like the giddy feeling I had after that first puff. That was sheer luck or providence on my side. I might have loved the feeling and might have become addicted. Beyond peer influence, youthful curiosity can drive youths into some of these habits, like my case. Same with drinking, same sex relationship and other habits.
2. Psychological factors: These are causes that emanate from the emotional or mental faculties of the victims. Some people suffer from identity crisis, which is a state of conflict in the mind as to societal expectations or one’s role or one’s real identity. This is why some people say they feel like a woman within,  but they have the external features of a man. It is a manifestation of conflict of identity. Such people will find themselves gravitating towards same gender for relationship. Another shade under psychological factor is when someone is experiencing trauma maybe from a loss (of job, loved ones, money, material possession, position, etc). The person may lose emotional and mental control over him/her self and begin to indulge in some of these habits, like drinking, soliloquising, etc. Another shade is abuse-induced. Victims of abuse may suffer trauma and begin to indulge in some habits. Children who have suffered sexual abuse can later pick up strange sexual practices, if proper therapy is not applied.
For easy digestion, we will continue with the remaining causes tomorrow.
God bless us all.

Dealing With Bad Habits (1)

There are thousands, maybe millions of people worldwide who are struggling with some bad habits. So many have become slaves of bad habits and have become addicted. Some have made several attempts but they keep finding themselves going back to the same thing. Some are willing slaves while some are unwilling slaves.
In this series, we will be examining those bad habits, their root causes, implications, remedies and management. My hope and prayer is that at the end of the series, someone out there would have been set freed.
First, we will examine what bad habits are as a foundation for this series. Bad habits are those impulse driven actions consciously or unconsciously taken, that have the capacity to reduce the chances of a person to reach his or her full potential. They could affect someone’s emotional, psychological, financial, material or physical well-being, both in the short term and in the long term.
Some habits are also known as conditions, that is, some medical or psychological causes maybe responsible. They may be due to some traumas or hormonal imbalance.
Examples of such habits include smoking, use of hard drugs, drinking, watching porns, masturbating, homosexualism, lesbianism, incest, bestiality, lying, stealing, gluttony, bed wetting, gossiping, procrastination, gambling, and so on.
These are habits that can alter someone’s life to the extent of losing self-control. The victims of such habits can be classified into three:

1. Willing Victims

2. Unwilling Victims

3. Indifferent Victims
Willing Victims are those who are conscious of the habits, enjoy indulging in such habits and even promote such habits. They are not ashamed of letting the world know what they do and they even try to win others to try the habits out. Examples are those who openly practice homosexualism or lesbianism, or those who indulge in use of hard drugs.
Unwilling Victims are also conscious of the habits, but are not happy doing it even though they have momentary enjoyment when they indulge in such habits. Such people always have post action regrets and guilt. They hide their habits and even deter others from indulging. Examples are some categories of smokers, those who masturbate, bedwetters, kleptomaniacs, nymphomaniacs, etc.
Indifferent Victims are unconscious of the habits and have neither sense of enjoyment or non-enjoyment of indulging in such habits. They are the extreme cases of addiction. They are usually those whose senses of guilt or pleasure have been dulled by one disaster or tragedy. To them life has no meaning and nothing matters anymore. Examples are those who took to the bottles after experiencing some huge loss.
We will continue tomorrow by examine the root causes of these habits.
God bless us all.
Good morning!

MESSAGES FROM THE PULPIT CONCERNING THE PODIUM

Rightly or wrongly, the Pulpit in Nigeria has been elevated to the point of infallibility. Over the years the words of the Clergy in the Church or Mosque have come to carry more weight than the words of a Governor or President. Some clergymen have known to have become reliable sources of knowing what the future will be like. As a matter of fact, at the beginning of every year, people throng to these clergymen to know what the year holds for them and the nation. Prophet Elijah in the Bible was known to guide Kings in his times on how to run their kingdoms.
This is why some Men of God command cult-like followership and attention that even a Governor of a State cannot command. In some Christian denominations, when the General Overseers (GO) call for general meetings of the workforce of the churches, you can be sure of a good attendance, same with the other religion. As a matter of fact, whenever some denominations hold their general meeting, traffic management agencies always have their hands full managing the traffic on the road leading to those denominations. Such is the hold of religion upon Nigerians. We are fast becoming the most religious people on earth. Whether our level of religiosity has any effect on our moral standard and living is another matter entirely!

It is therefore not surprising that Nigerians believe the words of their pastors or imams more than the budget or economic blueprint of the State or Federal Government. After all, government are known to always renege on their promise once they ascend to power, so their promises are often taken for a pinch of salt.  Of course, quite a number of opportunists have entered into the fold to take advantage of the believing followers.

One of the times Nigerians look up to Clergymen to know the mind of God is during elections. Rev. Father Mbaka was known to have prophesied correctly the defeat of immediate past President Goodluck Jonathan and this earned him no little recognition and fame. Pastor Tunde Bakare was also reported to have prophesied that SDP will fail, NRC will lose before the June 12, 1993 election that was annulled by Gen. Ibrahim Babangida. Truly SDP won but never tasted power due to the annulment. There have been quite a number of prophesies like these which have come to pass and some that didn’t hit the mark.

Do the Clergymen hear from God on matters like elections? Yes, I think they do. If God can speak concerning their members and church or mosque, why can’t He speak about the nation or its leader? Do they hear correctly all the time? No. Just as it is possible not to hear what someone tells you in a room clearly, there exists the chance that Clergymen may miss it sometimes. After all they are men with blood flowing in their veins too.

It is however dangerous when the following scenarios begin to happen. One, when we begin to equate clergymen with God and hold them infallible. At such stage, we are setting them up for big-time failure, because God is God and clergymen are just His servants. Their ability to hear well at any point in time is a function of their relationship with God at such time. Two, when clergymen begin to mix their minds with the voice of God. It only leads to confusion and disgrace. Three, when clergymen begin to believe they are infallible and tries to justifies the non-fulfilment of their prophecies. When a prophecy is proven wrong, the clergy is to go back to God and find out why, or check to see that it was not a self-produced prophecy ab initio.

On the background of the recent US Election and how President-Elect Donald Trump defied all odds and prophecies to defeat aspirant Hilary Clinton, it is appalling that a clergyman who predicted a Hilary victory in a video before the election has pulled down the video from the church website after the prophecy was proved wrong. Nigerians have been reacting to the failed prophecies and the pulling down of the video from the church’s website. This action is unfortunate and embarrassing to the body of Christ. Why pull down the video? Is this the first failed prophecy from the clergyman? Who is deceiving who here? Even CNN Poll of Polls failed in its prediction, CNN has not brought down its site for that matter! Political pundits all over the world, except for a few, missed it this time around, so why try to prove infallible! It is quite ‘unman-of-godly’, if you ask me.

The lesson here is that prophecies from the Pulpit concerning the Podium must be proven for their authenticity before being made public. And when a Clergy is speaking his mind he should not call it prophecy, because everybody is entitled to his or her own opinion. It is this rampant act of mixing the mind of men with the mind of God that is responsible for many of the unfulfilled prophecies, plus even God changes his mind when people pray. He changed his mind about Nineveh despite Jonah’s prophecies, so why can’t He change his mind concerning Trump?

Down But Not Out

At Wembley Stadium in a non-title fight in 1963, British Heavyweight boxer Henry Cooper hit Muhammad Ali with a left hook that saw Ali crashing down to the canvas,  save for the ring ropes he would have crashed headfirst onto the canvas. Ali was knocked down. However by a stroke of miracle, Ali recovered and eventually won the bout by a technical knock.
In 1971, in a bout that has been tagged ‘The Fight of the Century’, Joe  Frazier (Smoking Joe) defeated Ali in a unanimous decision after 15 rounds. Ali came back in 1974 to defeat Frazier in a non-title bout and in Manilla in 1975 to regain the world title from Frazier at round 14, in a bout later tagged ‘Thriller in Manilla’.
You may have been knocked down by life, but you don’t have to accept a knock-out. As long as there is still breath in you, you can fight again. Get back into the ring of life and give the enemy some serious thrashing. Winners are made from the materials of failures, so don’t see failure as the end of your life or career.
Give it another try again and again until you win. You are down but not out. You are only out when you stay down. So don’t stay down. You will have the last laugh.
God bless us all.
Good morning!

Who Has Your Log In Details?

Today’s world is driven by technology, this is why it is called the Digital Age, the age of information technology. Most of the things that used to take months or years in those days now take seconds or minutes to be done. We no longer use postal system to send our letters, we now use emails. We no longer use phone booths and cards to make those long distance calls, we use WhatsApp or Imo and others. It is truly a digital world.
Due to the plethora of digital media, we have personalised accounts like our emails, Facebook profiles, Google accounts and so on. Each of these has log in details that are known to only the users and cannot be accessed by others. This is moreso because we keep private information on most of these accounts, so we guard our log in details jealously. When someone hacks into your Facebook account, you feel like your privacy has been intruded into.
In the same vein, we should have log in details into our lives. Not everyone should be given access into your life. You can’t share your life’s log in details with just anybody, otherwise you will hear your life story where you don’t like. Don’t trust just anyone with your life’s secret, many will use what they know about you today against you tomorrow. Be very selective when it comes to choosing your confidants and keep the circle small. The bigger the circle, the less secure your privacy. Remember secured and unsecured sites (https and http respectively), is your life https or http?
God bless us all.

Believe Your Dream

Many forces will come at you to make you discard or jettison your dream. The force of reality will attack your faith in your dream. If your faith in your dream is not strong enough, you will accept reality.
Unknowingly to many people, every reality is a product of faith. We experience in reality what we believe most in our mind. If you hold onto your dream long enough, it will soon become reality.
People who have either lost their dreams or have no dreams will dissuade you to stop dreaming. They will tell you one thousand and one reasons why you should stop dreaming. You should know that if they were so smart they won’t be that unoccupied to be bothered about someone’s dream.
Your inner fears will attack your dreams like a flood. Your best choice is to allow your dream to lead you rather than acting out of fear. “Following your dreams is better than being led by your fears.” –  Matshona Dhliwayo
Don’t stop believing your dreams. Take steps no matter how tiny, towards your dream everyday. Soon enough, your dream will become your reality if you faint not.
God bless us all.

When the Rejected Becomes the Celebrated

Once in a while, the unexpected happens,  jolting us back to reality and to remember that God does not think as men think. When men are singing praises of a particular person, God may be busy polishing the rejected with the aim of creating an upset.
Quite a number of people gave Trump a zero chance of winning the US Presidential Election, but he has defied and trumped all odds. He is set to become the 45th President of the United States. With all the effort and support garnered by the preferred Democratic candidate, Hilary Clinton, she could not get the desired 270 electoral college votes. Predictions have been turned upside down, as predictions of narrow to wide margin victory in favour of Hilary has been completely reversed. Wow! What an upset!
After all said and done, I believe there are lessons for us all to learn from this election. A few of them are:

1. Don’t equate the voice of the people with the voice of God. You might not have God’s backing even when you seem to have the backing of the people.
2. Men pleasers are rarely the best leaders. You must know and do what is ultimately good for the majority, even when the majority do not understand you. Hilary and the democrats were all for political correctness, while Trump brashly spoke against some ugly norms.
3. Don’t understand the havoc that the unlearned majority can cause. They are not ruled by emotion or sentiments, they will never do anything to change the gender order. Many of the American voters still can’t swallow a female American President.
4. Don’t count your victory too early. Don’t announce your success prematurely, it might be truncated. Hilary was in the lead at the beginning of the election and all looked set to ensure the fulfilment of the dream of first American female President, but the story changed later in the day.
5. Rejects are no less instruments in the hands of God. In fact, God often uses the foolish things of the world to confound the wise, so Trump may just be the best thing to happen to America and the world today. Oratory power or not, Trump has won.
6. Nothing happens among men without the knowledge of God. Even when it appears like an error to us, God has a plan. Only time will prove Him right and prove sceptics wrong.
Long live America.
God bless us all.
Good morning!

Demand Will Be Placed On You

At every stage of your life, certain seasons will come when your true weight and your real worth will be tested. Demand will be placed on you to show what you are made of. Your value will be put to test. It is called the Test of Value or Worth.
You therefore need to keep equipping yourself for your next level. Learn. Study. Ask questions. Package yourself. Find out what is required for that next stage you are eyeing. Stay ahead of current developments in your chosen field. Don’t become outdated. No matter what you know, it will become stale if you don’t improve on it.
If you scale the hurdle of test of value, you will be promoted to a new level with vast opportunities and of course challenges, but don’t become too comfortable on the new level such that you stop preparing for the next new level. Sometimes you cannot meet tomorrow’s challenge with today’s knowledge.
Stay prepared because a demand will be placed on you.
God bless us all.
Good afternoon!
