I Will Die At My Post

The gallant late Lt. Col. Abu-Ali who led the Nigerian troops against the Boko Haram rebels was said to have told his colleagues to do 5% of the job while he will do the remaining 95% with an Armoured Tank. He was such a consummate soldier to the extent that he told his colleagues to take care of themselves at the battlefield and if anyone should die, it has to be him. Indeed he fought and gave his life for the freedom of citizens of the nation. May His Gallant Soul Rest in Peace. Amen.
Yesterday, in church as we were singing the hymns, one line caught my attention and brought Late Lt. Col. Abu-Ali to my memory. The line says, ‘I will be a true soldier, I will die at my post.’ Just as Lt. Col. Abu-Ali died at his post, everyone who will fulfil purpose must be ready to die at his duty post. If you have not found that calling that consumes your entire being to the point of being ready to give your life if necessary, you are yet to start living. He that seeks to save his life will lose it.
People who leave indelible marks in the sands of time are usually people who find their true calling and give their all to the calling. They don’t retire from their calling, they fight until they sleep in rest. Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Muhammed Ali, Martin Luther King, name them, they gave it their all until their last breath. Do you want to be registered in the Hall of Fame of posterity?
So as I joined in singing the hymn yesterday, I renewed my vow to stay at my duty post until I finish my earthly race. I will keep saying the truth, preaching and teaching the truth both in words and actions, speaking and writing against injustice, wickedness, unrighteousness and the ills in our society. I will do this using every legal means possible and with every ounce of blood in me. I will not be cowed or intimated by the persons involved and will remain true to my conscience and my Maker, so help me God.
I, Adewumi Oni will be a true soldier and I will die at my post. How about you? Have you found your post, let alone dying at your post?
God bless us all.
Good morning!

When Justice Becomes Negotiable

The magnitude of the unchecked corruption that took place in Nigeria under the previous administrations of the ousted People’s Democratic Party (PDP) is yet to be fully comprehended by Nigerians, especially the wanton and unbridled dip into the nation’s treasury that took place under the auspices of former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Amidst an unprecedented economic recession occasioned by drop in oil price and low savings of past administrations, we have been hit by another news of return of cash by the former Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko. He was reported to have returned about =N=1bn cash out of the =N=40bn reportedly diverted under his watch between August 2009 and August 2015. Given that the refund may have been in tranches, yet we are talking about an individual refunding =N=1bn!

As if that wasn’t enough, former Minister Musiliu Obanikoro was also reported to have returned =N=100m, even though EFCC rejected it, obviously feeling it was too small an amount compared to what Obanikoro got as part of the ‘Dasuki missing $2bn’. It has been tales of refund since this administration took over. We have become a nation of ‘refunders’, where past public officers are now returning a fraction of their loots after they have been discovered.

Yet, our former President Goodluck Jonathan unashamedly attempted to downplay the allegations against Dasuki and the corruption under his administration. This he did right in the presence of ‘Oyinbo’ people in Oxford. Wonder what he was trying to do, re-launder his image? Of course, the former President’s fantastic comment earned him fantastic rebukes from Nigerians!

Dikko’s refund is like the proverbial case of ‘we have not finished delivering the prophecies of Ifa Oracle and they are already playing out’. Former President Jonathan spoke in defense of his administration barely two weeks ago, yet another evidence of his maladministration just played out. It is such a shame what we have turned to and how greed has eaten deep into the fabric of our society.

To the thrust of this piece, given the unending cases of refunds and returns that have been reported since the inception of this administration, I am beginning to wonder whether our judiciary system still have the  moral justification or ‘locus classicus’ to continue to try and jail petty thieves and robbers who steal to survive. It appears that stealing big is encouraged while petty thieves are treated like poisons. If petty thieves are deserving of the kind of jail terms judges slam on them, then these looting public officers should not just be made to refund but also put behind the bars for life.

Our sense of justice seems to have become warped individually and collectively. If someone is caught stealing a Nokia set or snatching purse, he will likely be beaten to pulp and then set ablaze, yet when we see those who are looting our public resources we hail them and even accord them right of priority in everything. Just last week, Prof Pius Adesanmi  wrote about a Canadian Minister who had to refund $3700 to the government coffers after she was mollified by Canadians of overspending on limousine shuttles, and how in comparison, Nigerians protect their Chief Looters. Little wonder former President Goodluck deemed it fit to bestow National Honour on the late Alamiesegha. For a man to whom stealing is not corruption, even a Dasuki deserves royal treatment.

The combined of stealing of the likes of Oyenuga, Lawrence Anini, Monday Osunbor and co is nothing compared to the looting that has taken place in Nigeria during the last administration. Did these people deserve the death sentence slammed on them? Sure they did. But if they were deserving of firing squad, these public looters deserve more than firing squads, they deserve total obliteration! Agreed that those notorious robbers took so many lives before they were caught, but these ‘refunders’ have taken the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians! They have stolen both the present and the future of both living and yet unborn Nigerian children. Public funds that should have formed part of our foreign reserves, which should have been used in protecting the lives of our children in the North, in providing good educational facilities for our children all over the nation, in building state of the art hospitals across the nation, and in putting our roads in passable condition, have been stolen by few elites and all they get is some days in EFCC cell and a refund of some fractions. When they are charged to Court, they used part of the rest of the loot to frustrate the trial process. If they are ever found guilty, all they get is NEGOTIATED JUDGEMENT. This is the tale of our corrupt system. This is our story!

Woe unto those who continue to celebrate and recommend thieves for public positions. Woe to those who benefit from the negotiation of true justice. When justice becomes negotiable, the law has surely lost its sting.

The Future is a Product of Today

Whenever the seed of any plant is planted, it dies first. It dies and opens up for another life to come forth. It brings forth another life after its own kind. Without planting the seed, there can’t be a new life. The new plant that comes from the seed usually produces multiples of seed and then the cycle is repeated over and over again. Anytime plant ceases to grow, it is because the gardener has stopped planting seeds or something is wrong with the seed or soil.
When you begin to experience drought in your personal life, it may be an indication that you have stopped seeding or you are planting poor seed or on a bad soil. Anytime a country is undergoing recession as we currently are, it is an indication of not planting enough to generate the harvest that will more than meet the needs of its citizens.
In your personal life, you must keep planting seeds. Your seeds may be in form of investment, studying more, improving your skills, learning new skills, helping others, etc. Harvest is not automatic, it is the end result of seeding.
What seeds are you planting today? You have no right to demand from your future what you have not planted into your today. The future belongs to those who nurture the seeds of their today. Seed well today and the future is yours.

Double Identity

Like Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde in the popular Hyde and Jekyll story, many people are trapped (either willingly or unwillingly) in a life of double identity. While it may not be as serious as the Hyde and Jekyll story, a life of double identity is a miserable and tortuous life. The victims are usually torn between guilty conscience and stoicism. They feel remorseful after switching back to their Jekyll (the good) identity, but while in Hyde’s mode they are soulless and incapable of feeling any sense of guilt.
When you live a dirty, shameful and despicable life in secret, and present a different look in public, you are living a double life. We should strive to have and maintain same identity in private and public, and it should be an enviable identity. The sad part is that the private life always get exposed, no matter how much we try to hide it, so why set a time bomb for yourself?
Be true to your conscience and to the public by maintaining a single identity. Many of the cases of divorce, abortion, blackmail, kidnapping, murder, witchcraft, sorcery and other evil vices we see in our world today, are the manifestations of a life of double identity. No matter how highly placed you are, someday your private life will be thrown open to the public glare. Change today.
God bless us all.
Good morning!

Divine Speedbreakers

Speedbreakers are commonly found on roads where there is a lot of human trafficking or on roads that are not very long. The purpose of these Speedbreakers are to reduce the speed of vehicles and consequently reduce the chances of lone accident or collision with human or other vehicles. They are more of safety devices, though they slow movement down.
Just as we have physical Speedbreakers, there are also Divine Speedbreakers God places in people’s lives for several reasons. Such Speedbreakers sometimes are in the forms of disappointments, miscarriages, failures and some losses. God sees the end of a  journey from its beginning because He is called the Alpha and Omega (the Beginning and the End), so He knows where to put some checks in forms of speedbreakers to save us from suffering wreckage.
Such speedbreakers may be to save us from impending dangers. He often denies us some jobs or positions or requests because of the hidden danger ahead. They may also be to nurture some necessary attributes in us, before we proceed on our lives journey. If He wants you to develop the virtue of patience, He will slow you down deliberately until you learn to wait on Him. Other times, we encounter speedbreakers because we must meet certain people at that junction of our lives. Or for us to enjoy certain blessings reserved for some locations.
Whichever forms these speedbreakers take, they are all for one purpose, to ensure we get safely to our destinations. We therefore need to be discerning enough to know when what you are confronting is a divine speedbreaker as opposed to attacks from evil forces.
God bless us all.
Good morning!

Be Purpose Driven

It is sad and unfortunate that many people are driven by financial and material incentives, at the expense of their dream and purpose. Many have laid down their dreams in pursuit of wealth and riches. This is one of the reasons we have too many impassionate people in the both secular and non-secular circles.
Fat salaries and perks cannot buy you fulfilment or stir up your passion. There are many people earning fat salaries who feel empty and discontented about their jobs. This is the reason for the often heard expression, ‘I feel empty and unfulfilled.’
You can only feel passionate about what links you to your purpose. Instead of choosing jobs because of the salaries and perks, always ask yourself if it will help you fulfil your purpose. Be driven by purpose. Purpose will bring fulfilment, peace of mind, wealth and all the other things we are seeking.
A life that is driven by purpose is a rich and impactful life. You touch the highest number of lives in the pursuit of purpose. When you set out to pursue your purpose, you might encounter challenges and you may not be understood, but keep at it, your purpose will speak eventually.
God bless us all.
Good afternoon!
