Up Close and Personal – 21022024

My journey from Abuja to Lagos was a major turning point, a journey of faith. Sometimes, I wonder how I would have turned out if I had not taken that step.

To think that I had just 5k on me, half of which went towards transportation, going back to my uncle’s place wasn’t an option, and I had no clear direction.

I felt led to leave for Lagos, so I decided to go straight to RCCG Camp along Lagos-Ibadan expressway, to spend some days in prayer and seek God’s direction.

I arrived camp shortly before nightfall, only to be turned back at the gate because the security man said people weren’t allowed to sleep in the auditorium. I looked up in despair, and wondered where the son of man was going to lay his head. Then one of the guards advised I walk down a few hundred metres to another camp where I could pay to pass the night, and that was how I found myself at New Testament Assembly camp for two nights.

While there, I reached out to an egbon (elderly friend/brother) who lives in Lagos about my plight. He asked me to come over, even though he was sharing a room with another friend. (At least we would think of a way out from there).

That was how I got to Alagbole side of Lagos/Ogun (funny how the streets fall in between Lagos and Ogun States). From this egbon’s house, I moved to another Pastor’s house (after engaging him with my story), where I lived for over a year, before securing my first accommodation. God bless that family.

About 4 months after returning to Lagos, I got a job and my journey of being gainfully employed resumed again. I got the job through a father figure I met in the church I joined when I got to Lagos. Since then, he has remained a source of wealth of advice.

One major lesson here is that, sometimes you don’t have the full picture, but you must still take that first step. If I hadn’t followed my hunch that Sunday morning to leave Abuja, I wonder how different my life could have been.

So, what step of faith do you need to take to get to the next level? I leave you to ponder on this.

Cheers and have a great day.

Up Close and Personal – 14022024

So let us resume from where we stopped last week.

The crash seemed like a major setback and all attempts to format and restore the system proved abortive. There weren’t many training centres around that I could partner with or refer my students to at the time, so, that was how journey as a computer trainer ended.

With that source of income gone, I had to find an alternative. As fate will have it, I got a call from an uncle about a vacancy for an Accountant in a company in Abuja. I applied and was invited for test and interview. I remember acing both, but the fact that my uncle’s surname appeared on my CV created some issues and I couldn’t proceed further with the job. This was because he was a consultant to the company at the time.

I stayed behind in Abuja hoping to find another offer, while temporarily assisting one of my mentors/pastors back then to supervise his site workers.

It was another learning period, as this went on for 3 months without pay and at some point I had to assist in moving materials off the site when he couldn’t afford to pay the labourers due to delay in payment by the main contractors.

I recall that a corper friend of mine joined us for about a week, and told me one day that he won’t be coming again as he couldn’t be carrying moulded blocks (laughs). It was truly an humbling experience.

After 3 months of hardwork with little or nothing to show (aside lessons on patience and perseverance), I felt led to return to Lagos. I left Abuja with less than 5k (gotten from my pastor/mentor one Sunday morning that I woke up and decided that I had had enough of my situation) and left for Lagos with no particular destination in mind.

I will tell you my first point of call on arriving Lagos next week. Until then, continue learning from every situation you find yourself.

Cheers and Happy Valentines Day.

One of the lessons I have learnt in life is that you are ultimately responsible for how you turn out.

It doesn’t matter what you have gone through or what people have done to you, it boils down to what you make of your experiences.

One Christmas, I walked several kilometres to attend church service because I had no bus fare and was too proud (smiles) to ask my uncle whom I lived with then.
I resigned from the job he helped me secure without informing him (so silly and thoughtless of me).

I wanted to be a motivational speaker, so I started approaching secondary schools for speaking engagement, but I guess the sight of a struggling young and zealous man wasn’t that appealing.

So, I returned to my father’s house to start a computer school with the help of a friend and another uncle who gave me a computer system. With that computer system I started teaching the use of Ms Word and Excel Suites.

I had five students at some point (which was a great feat for me then), of which three graduated. Alas, when my class was about increasing, the computer system crashed. It was as if my world crashed also.

The little income from that venture wasn’t just supporting me, but my siblings also, cushioning the burden on my mum who became a widow early, with 6 children.

Let me pause here for today. I will share my journey from that point in a subsequent post.

Until then, keep learning from both your good and not so good experiences.

Cheers and have a great day.
