Up Close and Personal – 09/10/2024

There was a time I would go to the Computer Department at OAU and pay to check my email, hoping for an important message. It was a period when owning a desktop computer was a luxury, let alone having one at home. We were learning COBOL and FORTRAN in theory but had no access to computers to practice.

Most of our communication came through physical letters delivered to departmental mailboxes, which could take up to four weeks to reach the recipient. Though it sounds absurd now, our lives were less complicated. There were hardly any emergencies that demanded the instant responses we expect today, especially when chatting online. So, what changed?

Our world is now so “gadgetized” that we feel incomplete without a phone or some sort of device. Despite countless ways to stay connected, we seem more disconnected than ever.

I remember the routine trips to the post office to collect letters, and the sting of losing my P.O. Box at Ikeja because I didn’t renew the annual fee in time. While mailboxes are still used in some parts of the world, for many of us, they are distant memories.

In some ways, I miss those simpler days, days spent reading novels like James Hadley Chase, Pacesetters, Harold Robbins, Sidney Sheldon, and Robert Ludlum, or watching TV shows that began at 4pm and ended at 11pm. Our distractions were fewer, but our moments felt richer.
