Up Close and Personal – 02042025

I went for my periodic medical checkup last weekend. I usually avoid visiting this medical facility for various reasons, including:

1. Poor customer service
2. Confidentiality issues
3. Excessively long waiting periods

I typically visit the hospital twice a year unless circumstances require more frequent visits. Over time, I have conditioned myself to deal with the inevitable challenges, such as those highlighted above.

Last Saturday, I prepared for an entire day at the hospital, bringing my laptop and a book to make productive use of the waiting time.

I had hoped for some improvements since the hospital recently moved to a new and larger facility. I was optimistic that it would be less crowded than their previous location.

However, my hope was dashed right from the reception at the ground floor, where I was wrongly directed to the first floor instead of the second. Despite operating in their own larger facility, the problems seemed to have only escalated. Crowd management was poor, and the front desk staff, from the approval desk to the drug dispensing desk , lacked both knowledge and an understanding of confidentiality. They shouted across to each other, openly mentioning medications and tests that should be known only to the patients and the medical personnel involved. It was a sorry sight. I arrived at around 11 a.m. and left past 4 p.m., vowing to stay as far away from that hospital as possible.

Mind you, I had previously engaged their MD about the confidentiality issue, and he promised to address it. However, either he failed to do so, or it has simply become ingrained in their system. At this rate, I believe they are just one step away from a lawsuit.

This experience, along with others I have encountered in workplaces, makes me reflect on the rapidly eroding values of professionalism and excellence. It seems we have become a nation where mediocrity is the norm and where no one wants to be corrected.

How did we get here? What has truly gone wrong with us as a people?

Please feel free to share your thoughts.

Cheers, and enjoy the rest of your day and week!

Up Close and Personal – 04/12/2024

I experienced the truism, “you reap what you sow,” last weekend. While this may sound cliché, I believe this story will encourage someone out there to remember that nothing goes unnoticed by the universe.

I have a ward awaiting admission who has been staying with me for some time now. He has been a great help around the house, but last Saturday, a particular action brought back poignant memories.

That evening, after witnessing my beloved football team (Man City) being humiliated at home by Tottenham, I was about to retire to bed when I noticed a neatly ironed and arranged stack of clothes. Most of them were mine, washed earlier in the day. He had taken the time to iron and arrange each one, precisely as I would have done, if not even better.

As I packed the clothes, my mind drifted back to my undergraduate days, when I lived with my uncle. During breaks, whether due to the academic calendar, aluta disruptions, or ASUU/NASU/SSANU strikes, I would assist him with various household chores, particularly laundry. Saturdays were dedicated to hand-washing and starching clothes, while Sundays were for ironing and neatly arranging them. I continued this routine throughout my undergraduate years and even a year after graduation, until I got my own place.

It struck me that I am now a recipient of the same help I offered nearly three decades ago. This reinforced my belief that every deed, whether good or bad, eventually comes back to us, often in multiplied dimensions.

I encourage you not to give up on the good you are doing, even if it seems unnoticed or unappreciated. Your reward will surely come. On the other hand, if you are engaged in harmful deeds, I urge you to stop, because those, too, carry their own consequences. Reflect on this.

Take care, and have a wonderful day.

Up Close and Personal – 13112024

Sometimes, we get so overwhelmed with what we don’t have to the point that we become so ungrateful for the many things we have, but have failed to acknowledge.

Having heard or witnessed a number of sad ending of lives in the last few months, my approach to life has changed, and I’m becoming more intentional about being thankful.

First, I tend to stop worrying myself about the next day or some future issues. I just do what I can do and take it one day at a time. The moment I started doing this, I noticed a remarkable difference in my mood, mental health, and overall well-being.

No matter how big an issue is, I just do what can be done today and leave the rest for another day. It has worked for me thus far, and I plan to apply this philosophy to other aspects of my life. I suggest you try it too.

Secondly, I focus more on what I have and what I have been blessed with. Yes, I have needs, but I don’t agitate about them anymore, I simply plan as much as I can within my power. At the end of the day, nothing matters more than your life.

And no matter how important we think we are, people (even the closest to us) would move on, if anything happens to us. That is just how life is designed.

Lastly, stop bothering yourself about what people think, and to be honest, most people don’t even think about what you think they will criticise you for. And even if they do, it is their own cup of tea. Just live your life in a way pleasing to God, that is all that is required of you.

So, my dear friends, simplify your life. One day at a time, practice gratitude, and quit agitating over other people’s opinions.

Take care, and have a wonderful day.
