Up Close and Personal – 23072025

I started this Daily Reflection as just a periodic post while reflecting on life in general. Sometimes, I draw inspiration from events around me or personal experiences, and often, the inspirations are simply dropped into my mind by the Holy Spirit.

When it became clear that I needed to make this a daily post, except for Saturdays and Sundays, I knew I would need help.

The first was the inspiration to write five posts a week. By the grace of God, this has been consistent, except during periods when I took breaks to rest and refresh.

The second help I needed was in editing, as it soon became evident that I required an editor to proofread before I published each post. Since I couldn’t afford a paid editor, this being more of a service for me, I had to think of another way to meet that need. Then it occurred to me to put out a call for an editor who shared a similar passion and would be willing to work pro bono.

So I did just that about five years ago and received a few responses. I eventually settled on one of them, a former colleague, who volunteered to review my posts daily. Her name is Eniola Awolesi, and she has been doing this effortlessly since then. Even when she relocated and I feared she wouldn’t be able to continue, she remained steadfast.

This post is dedicated to her relentless contribution to the Daily Reflection, for faithfully reviewing and editing my posts week after week before I share them.

Thank you so much, dear Eniola. God will surely reward you for your labour of love. Amen.

To you reading this: please take time to show appreciation to someone today or sometime this week. It might just be the encouragement they need.

Enjoy your day and the rest of your week!

Cheers!

Don’t labor to be known; instead, labor on works that will impact lives.

When you really sit down and take stock of your life, you’ll realise that God places certain people in our lives for specific purposes and at specific seasons.

One such person for me was Deacon Segun Makinde. I met him at one of the lowest points in my career. In fact, it was after three months of struggle in Abuja. I had returned to Lagos still jobless. It was during one of those church services at Divine Connection Chapel, Ikeja, that he asked me what I was doing. After sharing my story, he requested my CV. A few months later, I was called in for a test, then an interview at FITC, and the rest, as they say, is history. I got the job and found my feet again professionally. He became like a father to me, both professionally and personally.
Thank you, Sir, for believing in me. May God bless you richly.

Another divine helper was Mrs Pauline Nsa, the then Managing Director of FBN Microfinance Bank. I had joined the bank from Accion MFB through a senior colleague and friend at the time, Chinwe (God bless her). I resumed as Head of Branch Operations at the Broad Street Branch. Chinwe, who was the Branch Manager then, had to go on maternity leave just four months after my resumption. She recommended me to the MD to relieve her, and so I found myself doubling as both BM and HBO. That season brought me closer to Mrs Nsa, who saw value in me that I didn’t even see in myself at the time.

Our relationship blossomed to the point that she personally went to EFINA’s office to question why I hadn’t been awarded their scholarship for a second time. As God would have it, that visit bore fruit. About a week or so later, I was contacted and told I had been granted the scholarship, a one-month training at the Boulder School of Microfinance in Turin, Italy. It was my first trip outside Nigeria, and I didn’t spend a single kobo, all thanks to Mrs Nsa and EFINA.

I am deeply grateful to have been blessed with such wonderful people in my life. And no matter how tough or rough your journey has been, there’s at least one person worth appreciating. So, why not reach out and appreciate them today?

Enjoy your day and the rest of your week!

Up Close and Personal – 09072025

Still on the subject of appreciating those who have impacted our lives in immeasurable ways, I want to acknowledge two more people today.

The first is my uncle, Mr. Funsho Ikotun (FCA), who sponsored my registration as a student member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) at a time when I didn’t even understand the value it would bring me later. I am truly grateful, Sir, for being a model and source of inspiration to me.

The next person is a friend from my undergraduate days. It was during my second year at OAU when I got allocated a shared room in Awo Hall, but I had no mattress to sleep on. I think I spent my first night on the bare string bed, those stringed beds from back in the day.

Olakunle Akinsola visited the next day, and when he heard how I had slept, he more or less insisted that I come stay with him in Staff Quarters, Road 20b. That was how I began squatting with him. Kunlexy, thank you for being a true friend then, and for still being one, despite the geographical distance between us today.

Like I said last week, let’s be intentional about remembering those who have impacted our lives and dedicate this month to reaching out to them.

Enjoy your day and the rest of your week!
