I attended an official event about two weeks ago, and a colleague sent some photographs of me at different points during the event.

One that vividly caught my attention was a side-view shot while I was listening to another colleague. I noticed that the few strands of grey hair on my head have now increased to several clusters.

I looked at the picture with mixed feelings. One part of me thought, “So this is what aging means,” while another part felt proud that these grey hairs came with experience.

There is nothing to be ashamed of in growing old, as long as you are gaining wisdom and growing. Isn’t it written that the glory of old men is their grey hair?

In summary, don’t worry if your hair is greying. It is just part of the journey. Make sure you enjoy the journey.

Until you begin to take responsibility for your life, your actions, and your inactions, you are not ready for growth.

We live in an environment that encourages communal living and extended family structures, which is good in some ways, but it sometimes engenders feelings of entitlement.

While we need a support system in life’s journey, it must be a system that we have contributed to building, no matter how small.

You are not entitled to reap where you have not sown. It is wrong to assume that because someone is related to you and doing better, he or she is obligated to help you. What if the person you are looking up to needs help?

I grew up knowing that there is a limit to what you should expect from others, especially those you believe should help you. Having lost our father at an early age (I was 2 weeks short of 15 then), the uncles, aunties, and relatives we thought would be of help couldn’t do much, and I hold no grudge against any of them. They probably had enough on their plates too.

I learned how to fend for myself and support my mother in my little way. I took responsibility for my growth and development, with guidance and the little support I could get. I never questioned anyone for not helping, and this probably is why I still find it difficult to ask for help (which may not be good on its own, because we all need help at some point).

The point is, seek help responsibly, but take responsibility for your life. Nobody owes you more than they can give. Know this and know peace.
