Up Close and Personal – 11032026

You can become so familiar with someone that you begin to lose sight of the value that person brings to the table. This is the risk of over-familiarity, and we are all guilty of it at times.

Having worked with my present employer for over nine years, I felt it was time to move on to a new challenge, so I submitted my notice of resignation last year. Because of my emotional connection to the organisation and my role as a pioneer staff member, I agreed to give more than the required notice period to enable a seamless transition for my successor.

Alas, it has been difficult to find one. As I began writing my handover notes, I suddenly realised that it may take a while, or perhaps even a miracle, to find a worthy successor willing to take on the role under the current terms and conditions.

Why? Because I grew through the ranks to become a Director. Each stage of my growth was a promotion for me, but not necessarily aligned with the value the market places on such a position. This happened because both my employer and I became too familiar with each other.

This happens often in relationships, especially until one loses them. So why not begin to appreciate the relationships you may be taking for granted, whether with an employee, a friend, a colleague, or even a partner? Let it not be too late before you realise that you have lost a gem.

Have a wonderful day.

Cheers!
