Daily Reflection – 11022026

We drove out this Saturday to get groceries and decided to take the shorter of the two possible routes. It turned out to be heavily congested, and we found ourselves stuck in traffic. Eventually, we had to look for the next turning so we could retrace our steps and switch to the second route.

After turning back, we took the alternative route, and the journey to the market took less than 15 minutes, far shorter than the time we had already spent on the initial route.

As I made the turn, it struck me that life is often like this. We choose a familiar path, believing we know the way, only for it to become a tortuous journey. Because we assume we know the way, we resist turning back or trying another route, until frustration forces us to reconsider.

Yet when we finally do turn back, what once seemed difficult suddenly becomes easier, requiring far less effort.

This reminds me of the Scripture:
“The labor of fools wearies them, for they do not even know how to go to the city.” — Ecclesiastes 10:15 (NKJV)

Lesson 1: Seek divine direction, and never assume you can walk it alone.

Lesson 2: A dead end does not have to be the end, it may simply signal that it’s time to turn back.

Up Close and Personal – 04022026

Last Saturday, I broke my record for the number of steps taken, with 22,000+ steps. It had been a while since I crossed the 20,000 mark, and two things were responsible.

First, I ran 10.48 km with my partner, who is still fairly new to running. We did a mix of brisk walking and jogging in almost equal proportion, unlike my usual ratio of 1:3. Along the way, I exchanged greetings with a not-so-familiar young man who was also jogging. He said, rather quizzically, “You are not running today.” I smiled in return because we had already covered almost 8 km at that point. Since he saw us walking, he assumed I wasn’t running, which was fairly correct, though not entirely.

My point is this: he wasn’t a familiar face, but he had obviously been seeing me. I had a similar experience over a year ago when someone greeted me in an elevator at the hospital during my annual medicals and said, “I always see you running at so-so Estate every Saturday.”

Lesson 1: Whatever you do, or are doing, people are watching you, just so you know.

Lastly, the other half of the 22k was covered on Lagos Island while looking for some particular items in the market. Since we didn’t have a specific store in mind, we walked the Israelite journey that day.

Lesson 2: When you don’t know where you’re going, you spend a longer time.
