Up Close and Personal – 14012026

If you cook fish within a 1km radius of where I am, I will definitely smell it. And this is not because I enjoy eating fish, far from it. The smell of fish nauseates me, and the only form of fish I can tolerate is fried. That is how bad it is.

It’s funny how children pick up habits from us, sometimes so uncannily close that you begin to wonder how they act exactly like you.

So, I was in one of my cooking moods the other day and rustled up some sauce made with sardines, then spiced a pasta dish with some of it. I thought everyone would fall in love with the dish, only for my almost 7-year-old son to say, “It smells of fish.”

I mean, I’ve always known he takes after me when it comes to this fish matter, but not to the extent of detecting a bit of sardine in pasta and then refusing to eat it.

Who do I now blame? Do I blame him for strong DNA, or myself for not liking fish?

It taught me a lesson: habits, likes, and dislikes run in the bloodline. Therefore, we must be intentional about what we practise, so our downlines don’t pick them up in geometric proportion.

Check your habits and proclivities now, would you want them in your children?

Have a wonderful day. Cheers!
