Up Close and Personal – 07012026

Happy New Year to you! I hope you enjoyed the holidays and are now back to work, whatever that represents for you.

I started this year by challenging myself to take on the Canopy Walk at the Lekki Conservation Centre on the third day of the year.

Let me give a brief description of the canopy walkway. It is about 400 metres long, making it the longest in Africa, with its highest point reaching up to 73 feet above the ground. We were advised not to look down, so we wouldn’t get discouraged, scared, or paralysed by fear.
Beneath the walkway is a swampy forest filled with reptiles such as crocodiles and snakes, alongside beautiful birds and monkeys. So you can imagine what it feels like walking above such a savannah forest. The seven walkways are connected by six towers, offering an aerial view of the forest.

Now, about the experience itself: like most scary dreams, I started with confidence, believing it could be done. But by the time we passed the second tower, “the point of no return”, doubt hit my mind. I began questioning myself, wondering who sent me on this walk (lol), because from that point on, it became truly frightening.

At times, the walkway would swing, and each time it did, fear hit me afresh. Still, I kept reminding myself that there was no going back and that I was not alone on the walkway. So every step forward became a step toward safety, and that mindset carried me until I reached the final landing stage.

This experience taught me some lessons that I believe will be useful for us this year.
First, stepping out of our comfort zone will scare us, I mean that deep-belly fear of “What have I gotten myself into?” But that fear is often the beginning of excitement, growth, fun, and freedom.

Second, we cannot afford to be paralysed by fear. We must keep moving forward, because if we remain stuck, it won’t just affect us, it will affect others too. Just imagine someone refusing to move on that canopy walkway; everyone on it would be stuck.

Third, every step you take forward moves you closer to your dream, so you had better keep moving. Every moment of delay simply keeps you longer in the same spot.

Lastly, if you keep looking back, you may be tempted to return, but the truth is there is no future in your past. Your future lies ahead, and each day of forward movement brings you closer to it.

So, as you step into this year, let these thoughts guide you. Dare to be different. Dare to chase big and scary dreams. Jim Collins calls this a BHAG – Big Hairy Audacious Goal.
I wish you bon voyage as you board the flight of 2026.

Cheers!
