We often do not value certain things until we have to do without them. I’ve been very fortunate to have good teams wherever I’ve found myself, and this has helped me record some great successes. So, I can say I’ve had a good run of performance for quite some time, until recently.

Within just a few months, I lost key members of one of the units under my directorate to Japa and other opportunities. I was left with the burden of rebuilding from scratch, right at the start of an audit exercise.

The things I used to take for granted suddenly became a big deal. Missed deadlines became frequent, and juggling between strategic and operational matters turned into my daily routine.

To make matters worse, finding the same level of commitment from the new team has been more difficult than a camel passing through the eye of a needle. I’ve had to make some tough decisions, letting some people go and reassembling a new team, all while critical deliverables remain on my to-do list.

One key lesson for me through all of this is that you’re only as good as the weakest member of your team. As the saying goes, a team is only as strong as its weakest link. So, as a leader, never compromise on standards when selecting your team; if you do, you’ll pay for it later.

Secondly, trust your instincts. If someone impresses you during an interview but something feels off, dig deeper, your instincts are probably right.
