Up Close and Personal – 04/12/2024

I experienced the truism, “you reap what you sow,” last weekend. While this may sound cliché, I believe this story will encourage someone out there to remember that nothing goes unnoticed by the universe.

I have a ward awaiting admission who has been staying with me for some time now. He has been a great help around the house, but last Saturday, a particular action brought back poignant memories.

That evening, after witnessing my beloved football team (Man City) being humiliated at home by Tottenham, I was about to retire to bed when I noticed a neatly ironed and arranged stack of clothes. Most of them were mine, washed earlier in the day. He had taken the time to iron and arrange each one, precisely as I would have done, if not even better.

As I packed the clothes, my mind drifted back to my undergraduate days, when I lived with my uncle. During breaks, whether due to the academic calendar, aluta disruptions, or ASUU/NASU/SSANU strikes, I would assist him with various household chores, particularly laundry. Saturdays were dedicated to hand-washing and starching clothes, while Sundays were for ironing and neatly arranging them. I continued this routine throughout my undergraduate years and even a year after graduation, until I got my own place.

It struck me that I am now a recipient of the same help I offered nearly three decades ago. This reinforced my belief that every deed, whether good or bad, eventually comes back to us, often in multiplied dimensions.

I encourage you not to give up on the good you are doing, even if it seems unnoticed or unappreciated. Your reward will surely come. On the other hand, if you are engaged in harmful deeds, I urge you to stop, because those, too, carry their own consequences. Reflect on this.

Take care, and have a wonderful day.
