Up Close and Personal – 14082024

Sometimes, the tide turns against you to challenge your resilience and strategy. This was vividly illustrated during the Community Shield match between my football club, Manchester City, and our rivals from the other side of Manchester, United, last Saturday.

Both teams missed key opportunities, and as the clock ticked towards the end, the game seemed destined for a goalless draw before heading into penalties. However, in the 82nd minute, we conceded a goal. Normally, Manchester United are notoriously difficult to break once they’ve taken a late lead.

But Manchester City is known for being relentless. We kept pushing, applying pressure, and it paid off with an equalizer—a brilliant build-up and header from the Birthday boy, Bernardo Silva. The first lesson: no matter how impossible it seems, never stop trying to turn the tide.

The match ended 1-1 in regular time, leading directly to a penalty shootout. United scored their first kick, but then our savior, Bernardo, missed our first attempt, swinging momentum back in their favor. The second lesson: never let overconfidence cloud your focus; even a strong run can change in an instant.

What followed was a tense catch-up game, with both teams trading successful penalties until United missed their fourth, allowing us to level the score. The pattern continued until the seventh round when the opponent missed again, presenting us with a golden opportunity. Akanji stepped up and seized it, securing a 7-6 victory in the shootout.

The third lesson: even when mistakes are made due to overconfidence, you can still recover if you maintain your focus.

In summary, no matter how tough or late in the game the tide turns against you, never give up. It’s better to fight until the end than to surrender without trying.

Cheers, and have a great day.
